Howard Hodgkin, 1993 - 2007

Howard Hodgkin Painting - image

Howard Hodgkin is widely regarded as one of the most important British artists working today. Neither wholly abstract nor figurative, his paintings attempt to recapture the intensity of experience which is frequently reflected in the titles. He paints in oil on wood, often re-using old panels and frames. Working from memory, he both reveals and obscures his subjects by layering the picture surface with bold colours and distinctive marks.

The exhibition follows new research by exhibition curator Ben Tufnell.

Sotheby’s To Sell Collection Of Turner Watercolours

Turner Watercolours

Sotheby’s announces today that on Thursday, July 5, 2007, it will offer for sale one of the finest collections of watercolours by Joseph Mallord William Turner R.A., (1775-1851) to have come to the market in living memory. Britain’s greatest watercolourist, Turner now enjoys an international reputation – something that has driven prices to ever-higher levels in recent years.

Henry Wemyss, Head of British Watercolours at Sotheby’s, characterised the collection, saying: “In all my 28 years at Sotheby’s, I have never before come across a privately-owned group of Turner’s works like this. To see these watercolours at first hand is a moving experience. With most watercolourists, it is possible to study a picture, admire it, and understand exactly how it is executed. With Turner, and these watercolours especially, you look, you marvel, but you cannot comprehend quite how he has done it. His method, the signal from his brain to brush is so quick, so precisely timed, so entirely confident, that it is difficult to describe. This is what singles out Turner as Britain’s greatest watercolourist. My colleagues and I feel enormously privileged to be in a position to study, and to bring to the market, a group of watercolours that so fully demonstrate his genius.”
